When you decide to homeschool your child, you are committing to taking charge of your child’s education. There are many amazing benefits to homeschooling, but the responsibility and time commitment is significant as well. You probably need to spend a good amount of time planning lessons and units. A great way to end a unit is with a project. Projects help children sum up, review and implement everything they have learned.

Projects are not only an important part of any homeschooling curriculum, but they can also be lots of fun. Most people have fond memories of some of the projects they did during their school years. Homeschooling parents are always on the look out for wayt to implement and test the knowledge they have taught their children and projects are a great way to get this done. A good plan is to have a multi-week unit set up for a given subject, and at the end of the unit assign a week-long project that will put to use and implement what your child has learned.

Do your best to allow your child to do most of the setting up on their own. Many parents are tempted to help their kids so that the project can look more tidy and organized, but it’s more effective to allow kids to learn from their mistakes. Once your child is done setting up, have them come up with a way to track progress on a daily basis. This will be an opportunity for your child to learn all about graphs and charts.

After your child is done detailing the plan, it’s time to gather the supplies. You child should have a list of supplies needed to put together the ecosystem. You can offer your child some assistance in setting up the aquarium but allow your child to do as much of the work on their own as possible. It much more useful for a child’s self-esteem to end up with a mediocre project they created all on their own, than to end up with a tidy and well done project that they know required someone else’s skills to pull off.

You can also engage other family members on such projects. The ecosystem, for example, could be placed in a prominent location in your home where other family members will have a chance to observe it and provide your child with feedback on his/her hard work. Parents of children in public schools know how exciting it is when a child comes home with a project they just completed at school. Homeschooling parents enjoy the benefit of having ’school’ at ‘home’ and therefore watching their child’s excitement throughout all stages of a project.

Homeschooling families are not limited by the practicalities necessary in public schools. Project ideas can be as diverse and far reaching as your imagination. For each unit, encourage your child to brainstorm a list of long term project ideas based on what they have learned. Allowing your children to come up with their own project ideas will not only trigger their creativity, it will also make them feel like they have a say in their education. This will make them more enthusiastic and excited about their learning and make for a more successful homeschooling experience.

  • What is ADHD and How do You Manage it?

    by Dr. Noel Swanson

There are some children who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The symptoms exhibited by these children are:

    1) They have a low level of concentration and a very poor attention span.

    2) Their memorizing powers are low and they have poor concentration.

    3) The are very impulsive and do things without thinking.

    4) Easily frustrated - because of poor concentration and memory when they cannot remember things, they get frustrated. This causes behavioral patterns like temper tantrums and outbursts

While most children as well as adults face similar difficulties during daily routine, those children who suffer from ADHD have a far larger frequency of these difficulties. The extent is so acute that they are unable to undertake tasks such as:

    a) at school (getting work done, paying attention, daydreaming, losing homework, talking in class, being disruptive, etc.),

    b) at home (often distracted, therefore not getting chores finished, constantly talking, “hyperactive”, getting into fights with siblings, difficulty getting ready in the mornings and at night, often clumsy), and

    c) in society (Often bossy and overbearing, show aggression, get frustrated easily and then have temper outbursts, and more)

ADHD is not a disease or illness in the sense that it is caused by germs, by injury, or by a clearly defined physical malfunction (such as asthma or diabetes). It is simply the result of parts of the brain not working at full efficiency.

ADHD can be called a hereditary condition, where parents and children show similar symptoms. The symptoms and the ADHD condition does not go away in short span of time and takes a long time to get under control. Sometimes children suffer from ADHD through their teens into their adulthood also.

    How do you manage ADHD?

The big concern for children with ADHD is the danger of developing long term complications. For example:

    a) because they can not concentrate, they may fail in school and so drop out,

    b) Are constantly in trouble because of their impulsive behavior

    c) Their fear of taking recourse to anti-depressants such as drinks, drugs, crime etc to avoid getting anxious and depressed.

All of these, in turn, can lead to long term complications that affect functioning in adulthood.

Effective management of ADHD starts at home. Parents have to be very patient and give their best to their child. The treatment of ADHD is very long, but it has to be given to the child so that he is a better adjusted adult. The goal is to prevent those long term compliations. Since you as the parent know your child the best, it is you who will have to take an active part in the management of his ADHD. An effective ADHD management program should include the following components:

COMMITTED PARENTS. These are parents who work wholeheartedly towards the betterment of the child. There is more than adequate information available in the form of books and videos to guide parents on how o assist their ADHD afflicted child. They just need to buy or borrow these read them and be better informed abut this so as to be effective. It is good to discuss what you read with a professional or a local support group as there is a lot of mis-information on this subject. This is especially from self professed guru’s who profess magic-cures for your child.

GOOD COMMUNICATION between home, school and other professionals. This especially applies to home and school, so do all that you can to meet regularly with the school to work together on solutions for your child.

It is a known fact that children with ADHD do better in ORGANIZED, quiet and structured and low stimulation ENVIRONMENT, but become worse in chaotic, unorganized and busy homes and classrooms. As a loving parent and a well wisher you will want the child to be better adjusted. Hence it will be a good idea to reorganize your home so that it keeps the child with ADHD calm and less stressful. And if the same can also be done in the school for the ADHD children, then it will help these children to be better adjusted in life.

CLEAR BEHAVIORAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGY Children with ADHD have to be given clear and exact instructions and expectations. If they are clear on the reward and punishment system then they will adjust their behavior accordingly. The support or the social worker can help you devise strategies for a Clear behavioral management program to help your child.

PARENTAL SUPPORT. Since getting along wit these children and bringing them up takes a lot of doing , the parents themselves are likely to get depressed and break up. To avoid marriages to break up and to maintain harmony, it is advisable for parents themselves to seek assistance from parent support groups, parent training groups, respite care, marital counseling, family therapy are such support groups and organizations.

MEDICATION for ADHD should be such that reduces the symptoms and lets the child the opportunity to learn academic, social, and other life skills. The aim here should be to get the correct medicine in the right dosage. child the opportunity to learn academic, social, and other life skills.

ADHD patients are given various medicines. Most of these are stimulants and a new rage is a medicine called atomoxetine. This is a new medicine for ADHD and is seen to be working very well and with negligible side effects. More information on this new wonder drug could be sought from the doctor.

As health professionals we cannot raise your child for you, nor can we solve all your problems as you travel with your child along life’s journey. What we can do, however, is to assist you in getting unstuck when you get stuck along the way. We will try to help you to sort out all of the above points as best you can.

The person who has to cope with this is you and your family. Therefore, this is best addressed by you and the first step towards this is to learn as much as you can. Learning all you can results in better management and better results.

A breastfeeding fussy baby is likely to be changed over to formula if the mother is thinking ‘just why is my baby fussy at night?’ She’s starting to wonder if her milk is causing the fussiness.

My suggestion would be this ‘It’s really not a good idea to change to using formula when you’re successfully breastfeeding. It wouldn’t cure the colic and baby needs the antibodies in your breast milk. Enjoy the fact you can successfully feed your baby yourself.’

Any formula you choose is bound to be inferior to the real thing and wouldn’t be a remedy. It wouldn’t cure the colic. My own colicky newborn got changed over to formula at 6 weeks old and I regretted it afterwards. I was one of many moms who do it hoping it will help.

While you’re feeding baby yourself it’s ideal for effecting a simple and quick cure for all the fussiness. So continue to breastfeed and make sure you learn what you need to do now.

Colicky babies being bottle fed can be helped too.

It might take 2 days or more, not just hours as it is for breastfed babies, as the missing nutrient would be supplied in small doses and then increased if it needed to be.

I believe there is one cause and one effective cure. Hundreds of babies have been helped, all because the cause of their colic was the same and could be treated the same.

Much is written about ‘colic causes and cures’ but my learning and experience indicate differently.

Does it seem very likely that although hundreds of babies were all given the same missing nutrient and all were quickly cured, the next babies to be treated in the same way wouldn’t be cured?

Why do so many babies have colic? It seems the newborns are depleted of a nutrient or nutrients they need, hence all the pain and crying. Once that’s corrected colic ceases to be a problem.

Colicky babies easily become colic-free, but first the parents are the ones who don’t find it easy because they have to accept that this remedy does work!

God provided the means for mothers to offer their babies the ideal diet. Exactly what baby needs, at the correct temperature and no bottles to sterilise and prepare.

Absolutely right for baby! Well, it’s meant to be, so what happens?

  • Public Death Records Search

    by Ben Jen

Death Records is one of the key public vital records. It is available free of charge. They are also provided commercially by private information brokers. Being public records, they are accessible by any member of the public. In other words, anyone can conduct a public death record search on anybody. There are variations in restriction and rules governing the retrieval and use of public death records from state to state but by on large, they are quite freely available.

Free public death records can be obtained from both government and private sources. The former can be requested by mail, telephone, fax or in-person. Many states now also have the online option. Private providers of public death records vary widely in the way their records are retrieved. Most of them are tied to a primary product or service and can be quite suspect in intent.

Assembling public death records from free sources can be quite a challenge. The best starting point is the government office itself if you know where the exact place where the death was reported. If not, the date or approximate time period can also prove helpful. Otherwise, you can start out with a wide search and zoom in step by step but this is only viable electronically in all practicality. But the most fundamental requirement to retrieve free public death records is time, patience and will.

The standard information contained in death records are personal particulars of the deceased, spouse, children and parents, time and place of death, obituaries, death certificate, burial and funeral matters. This information is commonly used in Genealogy research, family tree and other historical studies. A lot can be learned about the deceased especially when obituaries are attached. Social Security Number may also be available throwing up an entire host of other vital information and uses. The Death Certificate is the principal document in the death records and is required for many official and legal purposes. Its certified copies may have to be separately requested.

There are many professional online record providers to choose from on the major search engines. Prices are very reasonable for the mileage you can derive and most top-tier providers offer money-back guarantee. On top of public sources, they tap into private and proprietary database networks. Very good information and guidance on free public death records are found at review sites on the internet. There are also other websites which offer free tips and information so it pays to browse around.

  • Parental Control Software Explained

    by Chris Channing

Parental control software has a simple purpose: keep one’s child safe from all the harm that the Internet may bring. The Internet, as it has been made apparent in past decades, can be a very dangerous place for children who aren’t as educated as adults on what is safe and what isn’t. Because this is so, parents should always try to find a good parental control program if they wish to give their children access to the Internet.

Parents who don’t necessarily have the time to watch their children each and every time they want to access the Internet will do good in remembering the benefits of the remote monitor tool. A remote monitor tool, like the name suggests, will allow parents to view the computer screen of the child’s computer with a different computer altogether. This can make multitasking much easier- which is something parents have learned to do quite well in this day and age.

Perhaps the most dangerous of all the Internet dangers is the Internet predator. An Internet predator is especially dangerous since they often try to trick children into thinking they are children as well- and they may try other cunning tricks they have thought up. An online parental control tool can block access to websites that might harbor such threats, not to mention several chat tools can help parents wage their war against online predators.

Children aren’t the only ones to gain benefit from a parental control tool. Viruses, malware, and other atrocities will be less likely to get through to one’s computer if there is a strong parental control filter guarding against such attacks. Filters will be able to scan and find problems in websites or downloaded files, and then give the go ahead when things check out. This can save consumers hundreds in repair fees, simply because of a parental control program.

Another benefit of the parental control program is to simply limit that amount of time a child is allowed to access the Internet. While there are times that Internet access is needed for schoolwork, much of the time children play on the Internet out of boredom. This can deter their health, which is dependent upon healthy exercise and outside play.

Lastly, a good parental control filter will protect a family from prosecution due to copyright infringement. Children often do not know the definition of copyright infringement, and thus will download music at will without disregard. This can turn out to be an expensive mistake, as owners of the music may seek to sue for damages in downloaded content.

    Final Comments

A strong parental control program can give parents a peace of mind in knowing that their children are safe when accessing the Internet. The benefits of having protection against a virus or spyware applications can also be well worth the investment. In the end, the small fee that most parental control programs charge for the wide range of benefits they offer is more than worth it- as it will pay for itself again and again in saved damages and repairs.
