There is more and more talk amongst parents about spending quality time with their kids. However, some parents believe that an hour of quality time is sufficient and that nothing more needs to be done. If the hour was a productive one such as going out to eat, watching TV. together, playing with eductional toys, or going to the movies, parents seem to be satisfied with that. However, quality time involves more than just an hour a day because an hour is a relatively short period of time and doesn’t allow for in depth bonding.

It is that bonding that makes spending quality time with the kids important. It is a time where the parent can show their child things, do fun activities together, and even teach their children values. When a child is not getting to spend time with their parents, they are constantly getting mixed signals regarding right and wrong. What the babysitter may consider to be right might be considered wrong by mom and dad, so the child may feel like they are constantly getting in trouble with their parents when they are all together.

However, quality time isn’t just to do things such as going to the park or going to the movies. Sure, that is a lot of fun and kids will love you for it, but quality time is comprised of so much more than impressing the kids with fun things to do. It is an unfortunate fact that some parents are so into making up the time that is lost throughout the week by doing huge fun things like going to an amusement park, that they forget about things such as school work and other important things. A dad that brags about spending quality time with his kids by taking them to Disney World one day may not know how the kids are doing in school. That is why quality time should also consist of helping the kids with their school work.

By setting aside a time in which you can be available while the kids do homework can mean so much to them. If they have a question and you can be proactive in helping them find the answer, they will feel so great when they see the answer before their eyes. It is such a great feeling to be struggling and mom and dad help find the solution rather than give the answer. This teaches problem-solving skills which are skills that parents should instill in their children.

Something else that parents should avoid is being peers instead of parents. Many parents are concerned with being their children’s best friend. Sure, that can be a great feeling when your child feels like you’re the greatest thing in the world, but it is important to maintain that parenting role even when hanging out with the kids while they play with electronic toys. It keeps that degree of respect that needs to be there.

As for parents looking for a way to spend time with the kids, there are creative ways in which it can be done. First of all, write down your schedule and see if there is any way to make modifications to it. If there is, try to set aside the same times every single week in order to create a routine with the family. This is a great way to make sure no one else in the family schedules other activities during these times. If one of the children’s friends asks, “want to come over Thursday after school?” Your child can let them know they can’t because it is family night. There are many ways in which a parent can spend time with their kids. All it takes is a few modifications and some great ideas.

  • What Does Gestational Diabetes Mean?

    by Julia Hanf

When a pregnant woman who has had no history of diabetes gets the disease, it is called gestational diabetes. This usually occurs around the twenty-fourth to twenty-eighth week of pregnancy. The United States alone reports 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes each year. With the right medical care, a good diet plan, and monitored weight gain a woman with gestational diabetes can deliver a perfectly healthy baby.

To eliminate the possibility that a woman has gestational diabetes, her physician will perform one of two tests. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (One Step): after a pregnant woman has not eaten anything for a period of four to eight hours, her blood glucose level is tested. Then she will drink a concoction that is extremely high in sugar content and be tested again in approximately two hours. Two Step: this test requires the pregnant woman to drink the above mentioned concoction first, without the fasting period. Then after one hour, her blood glucose level is taken. A non-diabetic woman will have a normal reading at this time. A woman who has a high level of blood glucose will be re-tested by means of the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test to be certain that she has gestational diabetes.

It is not known for sure why gestational diabetes occurs. However, theories suggest that the developing baby produces hormones that block the mother’s ability to create enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal. Due to the changes that her body is undergoing, she may need up to three times as much insulin as normal to eliminate the excess sugar in her blood stream. The excess of sugar in the blood can be directed to the fetus, through the placenta, causing a condition called Macrosomia or simply put, “fat baby”.

Additional risks for the mother-to-be and her child are: A caesarian section may be needed to prevent endangering a macrosomic infant. Low blood glucose levels may exist in the baby. Jaundice may be present in the baby. There may be low levels of minerals in the baby’s blood. The baby may have trouble with breathing when born. Children born under these circumstances run higher risks of being overweight. Developing Type 2 diabetes is more common in the mothers and children. The risk of gestational diabetes in future pregnancies is higher.

In order to steer clear of risks to both mother and her fetus, gestational diabetes needs to be caught and dealt with promptly. A physician will recommend a nutritious diet and safe exercise plan. Moderating carbohydrate intake and exercise helps to control weight gain. An extreme weight increase leads to complications for the mother in addition to the instant and potential risks to the infant. If Insulin is required to manage blood glucose levels, the physician will explain how to take it. Keeping an eye on the blood glucose level is another way to steer clear of danger.

Generally, gestational diabetes disappears of its own accord. The mother’s capability to produce her own insulin is no longer affected by hormones produced by the placenta. After about six weeks, it is recommended that the mother’ blood glucose levels be tested again. This reduces the possibility that she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, when in fact either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes was making itself known and coincided with pregnancy.

Women who have had gestational diabetes, and their children, can reduce the risk of having Type 2 diabetes later on by making alterations in their eating and exercising habits. Eating right and exercising are essential to losing weight; obesity is the leading cause of Type 2 diabetes.

During pregnancy, a lot of changes happen in the body. These changes may cause some discomfort and sometimes certain health conditions. One of the health conditions that women may develop due to pregnancy is acid reflux. Let’s talk about acid reflux and pregnancy.

Is Acid Reflux Normal During Pregnancy?

Acid reflux is actually common among pregnant women. In fact, 1 in 4 pregnant women experience symptoms associated with acid reflux, such as heartburn, all throughout their pregnancy. The condition is also considered a pregnancy side effect and affects a third of all pregnant women. The good news is, acid reflux normally goes away after pregnancy. If this doesn’t happen in your case though, there is always treatment available after proper diagnosis.

Why Do Pregnant Women Have Acid Reflux?

There are many reasons. The three major reasons for acid reflux during pregnancy are hormones, weight gain and pressure.

    - Hormonal Changes - in a pregnant woman’s body tend to rise dramatically. When this happens, more acid is produced in the stomach, causing acid reflux. The hormones estrogen and progesterone may cause constipation and slower digestion, which in turn may worsen the symptoms of acid reflux. Furthermore, these hormones may also weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easy for stomach acid to enter the esophagus.

    - Added Weight -caused by pregnancy can contribute to hiatial hernias, a condition in which a part of the stomach extends beyond the diaphragm. As a result, acid tends to reach the esophagus.

    - Pressure - builds inside the stomach as the baby grows. As a result, food is sometimes pushed through the diaphragm along with stomach acid. Thus, acid reflux occurs.

What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux In Pregnant Women?

Vomiting and Nausea - During the first trimester of pregnancy, women often feel like vomiting or nauseated. For other women, these symptoms can go on for up to 9 months. These symptoms are said to be mainly caused by the rise of hormone levels in the pregnant woman’s body. Those with worse cases of acid reflux may develop malnutrition. Pregnant women who already had acid reflux before pregnancy are more likely to have worse cases of reflux compared to those who never had the condition before.

    What Are Available Treatments?

H2 Blockers and Antacids - If drugs are necessary, a doctor may prescribe antacids and H2 blockers. These medications mainly act to neutralize acid levels in the stomach and reduce discomfort. However, there are other kinds of treatment that can be applied during pregnancy. These include lifestyle changes such as having a special diet, elevating the head while sleeping, and staying fit.

Considerations - Treatment for acid reflux during pregnancy is often more challenging because most medications are not recommended to pregnant women. The welfare of both the mother and unborn child is often the focus when doctors recommend medication. Furthermore, drug interaction may occur if the pregnant woman is already taking other drugs. Treatment for acid reflux and pregnancy is either a good or bad combination. This is why you should always speak with your doctor first for the most suitable treatment for you.

  • Tips On Parenting

    By Emma Gibson

Parenting is simply the method of raising your children from birth until they become adults. Parenting starts right after you give birth to your baby. And from this stage, you are required to give them all the guidance that they need to grow as important members of the society.

First of all, you need to know the duties a parent should observe to their children.

    Physical security

Providing physical security is the first and foremost duty of a parent. This primarily means providing proper shelter, clothing, as well as nourishment to your children. This also means caring for the health of your siblings, as well as protecting them against the dangers that could happen to them. Proper guidance should always be observed in parenting.

    Physical development

After providing physical security, next thing that you should consider is providing physical development. This means training your children to boost their physical capabilities through games and other physical activities that would benefit them. Proper nutrition also falls down on this category.

    Intellectual security

Next is providence of intellectual security to your children. This means creating a peaceful atmosphere in your homes with no verbal abuse that could affect the child’s well being.

    Intellectual development

After intellectual security comes intellectual development. Proper education should be given to the children because it is their right to be educated. Moreover, you could boost the intellectual development of your children by teaching them some ethics and norms of this world. As parents, you are also their first teacher so while they are young, teach them how to write, read and count. Guide them also while they are studying.

    Emotional security and development

After the physical and mental state of your children, the next thing to consider is their emotional well being. Show your children how much you care for them by demonstrating your love to them. Some things that you could do are to hug them, caress them and kiss them. Children always want to feel that they are being loved by the people surrounding them. So as parent, you are the first one who should be showing this to them.

Parenting is not an easy job. One should be prepared in the full sense of the word. This means financially, physically, as well as emotionally prepared. The future of your children and who they would be in the future is in your hands. The kind of person that they would be will depend on how you parent them. That’s why, don’t take parenting for granted.

Knowing your duties as a parent is the most essential parenting tip that you could ever get. Your children need every attention and care you could give them in various realms of their lives: physical, mental and emotional.

Although, everything could be summed up in one word… LOVE. Showing genuine love to your children is the best thing that you could ever give to them. As they say, love conquers all. So show your love to your children, and surely, they will love you back.

The Truth About body changes during pregnancy

The next thing you should do when planning your pregnancy is to stop all forms of birth control. This will allow the drastic effect any birth control pills or other hormones to leave your system. Birth control pills can negatively affect your baby’s health, so making sure your body is completely free of any unnecessary substances will help ensure a healthy baby.

Recent studies show a strong link between maternal anxiety levels early in pregnancy and a child’s susceptibility to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) years later.

Raw eggs are definitely to be avoided. This of course includes all foods that contain raw eggs. This is because raw eggs may contain salmonella. These products include mayonnaise, Hollandaise sauce and Caesar dressing.

Smoking in general can cause health problems. Even if you don’t smoke, being around someone who does smoke during your pregnancy can increase chances of health problems for you and your unborn child.

The first thing you must do when you find you are pregnant is to visit an obstetrician/gynecologist (OBGYN). They will give you an ultrasound to see how far along you are and whether your pregnancy appears to be normal. This stage is crucial, and it is important not to leave this too late.

Backache is obviously going to be a major problem. With a developing baby pushing your abdomen out and forward, greater stresses are placed on your spine. An increase in the hollow at the base of the spine as the baby develops also causes problems. Try avoiding lifting heavy weights during pregnancy, and also making sure you have good support from your mattress. You can buy a support belt that lifts the abdomen and encourages better posture. These belts are safe, and can eliminate back pain.

The best fitness tip that I can give you is to stay active. It is as simple as that. It is however a fact, that most activities that you were doing before pregnancy, you can participate in during pregnancy.

Moisturize your belly and your breasts to reduce itchiness and dry skin. To avoid skin irritation, use an unscented high-quality shielding lotion that won’t wash off and can protect against environmental irritants and air pollution. Use a mild soap when washing. Avoid hot showers or baths. They can dry out the skin.

Certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure or a history of miscarriage are contraindications for exercise, but most healthy women, under the direction of their doctor or health care provider, can exercise throughout the whole of their pregnancy right up to the time of labor.

You should use common sense when deciding which activities are safe. Above all, listen to your own body, and if you’re still worried, discuss your concerns with your doctor. • Pregnancy Exercises And Its Benefits

    by Randy Swanston

Pregnancy exercise has many benefits that promote both physical and emotional well-being for you and your baby. Exercising will help you feel better about your body during pregnancy and can help you maintain a healthy weight gain during pregnancy.

It is important for expectant mothers to realize that healthy nutrition and balanced active lifestyles will enable them to have healthier pregnancies and newborns. This also helps them to get through the birthing process and labor more readily and easily. But, the level of your continued efforts will depend a lot on your pre-pregnancy fitness levels.

When you exercise and workout as a pregnant woman, you can tap into a wide array of benefits regardless of which trimester you are in, early or late, pre-labor or post-delivery. Exercise and tailored workout routines can very easily relieve backaches and lower back pains specifically associated with carrying extra weight around your belly.

Exercising during pregnancy stimulates the blood flow and circulation throughout the body. It also improves your digestion, accelerates any movement in your intestines and fights heartburn. It is important to always consult your doctor when considering an exercise routine, especially if you weren’t particularly active before pregnancy.

Exercising during pregnancy will make you more conscious of deliberately improving your posture by strengthening and toning muscles in your back, butt, and thighs. These types of exercises will also prepare you better for what lies ahead in labor and delivery as you enter the final stages of the nine-month journey. If you gain less fat during your pregnancy, losing whatever you gained is no big deal.

Exercises can increase your sense of control and boost your energy levels. Not only does it make you feel better by releasing endorphins, exercising correctly can help you sleep better by relieving the stress and anxiety that might make you restless at night. The skill of relaxing and good breathing has been known to help prepare a pregnant woman to cope with the challenge and discomforts associated during delivery.

Due to pregnancy hormones, the ligaments that support your joints become more relaxed. Because of this added mobility in your joints, there is a high risk of getting injured. For this reason, you should avoid bouncy, high-impact or jerky exercises.

Doing exercises on a regular basis will help you keep your body fit and healthy. Regular activity during pregnancy also prepares your body to cope with the rigors during delivery and allows you to bounce back to shape quicker. For most women, the goal is to maintain their fitness level throughout pregnancy. But don’t expect or make an effort to lose weight by exercising while you’re pregnant. Do maintain pre-pregnancy fitness levels throughout your pregnancy.
